FIVE Reasons Your Engagement Session Should Be a Date

Your engagement session should be a date.

We have this conversation with many a couple: What should we do? Where should we go? What should we wear? When clients are feeling stumped, we are more than happy to share our favorite spots to photograph, or places that other people have enjoyed going for their own sessions. Our favorite solution, however, is to encourage them to think of their session as a date. This has so many benefits that we’ve made a list! We love lists! And dates!

1. You will actually look forward to it.

You’re already taking a slice out of your mutual free time to book an engagement session: why not make the most of that time and plan something fun and meaningful? By planning an activity or a destination that adds value to your time with us, it makes that “appointment” on the calendar much more exciting to prepare for!

2. It can help you choose your outfits.

If you know where you’re going and what you’re doing, especially if it’s a location or activity you’re used to, you’ll have a much more solid framework to decide what you’ll be wearing. Are you planning on going for a leisurely walk through your favorite part of the city? Trying to go for a mini woodland adventure to your secret river spot? Getting dressed up for a swanky night on the town? Knowing how you want your date to go can help set the tone and wardrobe for your session.

3. You will instantly be more comfortable.

If you’re planning to do an activity that you’re already looking forward to, going to a place you both enjoy, and wearing outfits that a) make you feel like a babe or b) make you feel extremely comfortable in your own skin, then you’re going to be way more open to the less familiar element of being photographed.

4. The photographed locations can add significance.

When your setting has sentimental value, the images themselves will be keepsakes of one of your favorite places to spend time. Even the simplest locations or activities can have magic if they are a testament to your experience together; that’s what makes each session so much fun!

5. Better opportunities for connection.

In a date scenario, the two of you be able to be better present with one another, and your unique dynamic will be that much more evident to us as photographers. Selfishly, we’re invested in you having a good time: when you enjoy your time together and really connect, we can more accurately capture what makes the two of you special.
